Washington University athletic director John Schael announced that Wendy Dillinger has resigned as the Bears' head women's soccer coach to become the head coach at Division I Iowa State. Dillinger replaces Rebecca Hornbacher, who stepped down in December after leading the Cyclones for six seasons.
In six seasons on the Danforth Campus, Dillinger guided Washington U. to an 86-25-8 overall record and ranks 14th among active Division III coaches, winning 75.6 percent of her games. Exhibiting the balance between athletic and academic excellence, Dillinger led the Bears to four University Athletic Association championships and four NCAA Tournament appearances. In the classroom, WU had four
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans, 10 Academic all-District honorees and 68 Academic all-UAA selections.
The Bears advanced to the NCAA sectionals for the third time under Dillinger in 2007, and tied a school record for wins in a season, with a 17-4 overall record. In addition, the Bears won their fourth UAA championship in six years, while Caryn Rosoff garnered UAA Player of the Year honors.
"Wendy developed a successful, competitive and nationally respected women's soccer program. Her teams were well coached in every facet of the game and played with passion, energy and precision," said Schael. "This is a wonderful opportunity filled with new challenges, and I am confident Wendy will lead the Iowa State women's soccer program to new heights."
She guided the Bears to a 17-3 overall record in 2006, including a perfect 7-0 mark in UAA play. Dillinger and her staff picked up UAA Coaching Staff of the Year honors after capturing the UAA title and advancing to the NCAA Sectional Semifinals. In 2004, the Bears posted a 17-3 mark and advanced to the sectional finals.
Dillinger played four seasons at Indiana, establishing herself as one of the top players in school history. A three-time all-Mideast Region selection and a two-time all-Big Ten pick, she set 25 team records and graduated as the club's all-time leader in goals (37), assists (24) and points (98). Dillinger went on to play with the Atlanta Beat of the WUSA in the league's inaugural season in 2001.
Iowa State posted an 8-6-5 record in 2007, earning a berth in the Big 12 Conference tournament. The Cyclones defeated nationally ranked Oklahoma State and Missouri, and posted a 1-1 draw with No. 3 Texas. Iowa State lost in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament to Texas A&M in a shootout.
Washington University will immediately begin a national search for a new head coach.
