JHU shocks York, Messiah upends Rochester; Williams, Carleton, Wash U. women win

On the men's side, the drive for the Sweet 16 is over as every one of those sixteen spots have been claimed: Montclair State, Emory, Christopher Newport, Loras, Ohio Northern, Hobart, Carleton, Middlebury, Johns Hopkins, Stevens, Augsburg, Ohio Wesleyan, Amherst, Swarthmore, Messiah, and Trinity.
For the women, all 16 have been filled: Williams, College of New Jersey, Ithaca, Lynchburg, Wheaton, University of Chicago, UW Stevens Point, Eastern, Amherst, Otterbein, William Smith, Carleton, Messiah, Johns Hopkins, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Washington University.
In a look at the men's matches,
Messiah got by Rochester, 1-0 this evening at the Yellowjacket campus. In Texas, Trinity was a 2-0 winner over UT Tyler. The Tigers had goals from Ben Grossman and Cameron Hogsett, and outshot Tyler 28-5. Mark Oliphant had 14 saves in the goal for Tyler. Trinity now faces Ohio Wesleyan this weekend.
Johns Hopkins traveled to York today and came away with the upset and a pass to round three of the NCAA tournament. The teams played to a scoreless draw and after 110 minutes, moved to the PK round where the Blue Jays prevailed 4-3. This weekend. they'll face
Stevens, who defeated Rhode Island College 2-0 this afternoon. RIC ends their first run into the post-season with a 1-1 record and a great experience on which to build for 2009. And
Amherst continued their run by defeating St. Lawrence 1-0. Senior co-captain Jake Duker had the game winner in the 68th minute for the Lord Jeffs, who now will face Swarthmore.
At Swarthmore, the hosts defeated Dickinson 1-0. Dylan Langley had the winning goal for the Garnet.
Montclair State moved into the third round with a 1-0 win over Westminster (Pa.). With the win, MSU faces the winner of tonight's Rochester/Messiah match. Hobart duplicated that score in their win over Cortland State. Tommy Hayes had the game winner for the Statesmen. Hobart will face Ohio Northern next weekend. In Vermont, Middlebury had to battle Norwich through 82 minutes before they could get on the board, but Robbie Redmond's goal late in the match sealed the win. The Panthers outshot Norwich 19-9, and had 15 corner kicks to Norwich's 0, as the Middlebury defense held up well. Next up for Middlebury is Carleton. And in the West region, Augsburg defeated Redlands 1-0.
At Emory, the hosts and North Carolina Wesleyan played to a 1-1 draw and went to PKs.
Emory came out the winner in the PK round 3-2. Emory will face Christopher Newport next weekend. In Minnesota, Carleton moves on with a 1-0 win over UW Platteville. Wes Elfman with an assist by Ryan Cammarota had the game winner for the Knights who will take on Middlebury next weekend. UW Platteville ends their first post-season run with a solid 1-1 record and two great match experiences under their belt. Look for them in 2009.
In women's action,
Williams College cruised past Husson 3-0, TCNJ took care of Western Conn State 3-0, and UW Stevens Point were 2-0 winners over Loras College. Eastern surprised Rowan with a second half goal by Ashley Hackman to win 2-1, and William Smith needed PKs to overcome Endicott. At Lynchburg, the hosts moved on to the Sweet 16 with a 1-0 win over Emory. Katie Santos had the game winner for Lynchburg. And Johns Hopkins got by Virginia Wesleyan 1-0 on a goal by Caitlin Moore. The Blue Jays advance to play William Smith this weekend.
In a mild upset, Carleton traveled to Puget Sound and came away with a 1-0 victory. Cassie Burke had the game winner for the Knights. Further east, Amherst shut-out host Springfield College 3-0, and Otterbein defeated Denison 2-0. Neither team has allowed a goal in their first two matches. At Messiah, the Falcons cruised past Wash. & Jeff. 6-0. Next weekend, Messiah will face the University of Chicago. And in St. Louis,
Wash U played Illinois Wesleyan to a scoreless draw, but prevailed in the PK round 3-1. The Bears will face Wheaton this weekend at a site to be determined.
