In women's action on Friday evening,
Carleton College defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 1-0 to extend their first ever NCAA post-season appearance to the quarterfinals. Freshman Lily VanderStaay scored the game winning goal for the Knights off a breakaway in the 37th minute. Sophomore Merritt Swain had the assist on Vanderstaay's goal. "We knew they played three in the back," said Carleton coach Keren Gudeman, and "it was just a matter of time before we got a chance. It was a wonderful counterattack with a beautiful feed and a great finish."
Both teams provided offensive strength with Carleton recording 12 shots and C-M-S recording 11 shots. Kate Trenerry had six saves for the Knights, while C. Friedman-Gerliczin stopped four for the Athenas.
Carleton now faces Wheaton on Saturday evening at 6:00.
The Thunder shutout Washington University 3-0 in the match played earlier in the evening. Senior Kari Klynstra had the game winning goal early in the second half for Wheaton, who outshot the Bears 22-7. Wheaton's Pete Felske on his team's performance, "I feel good about the energy that we had tonight. Hopefully we can sustain it tomorrow." He added, "Our offensive pressure wears people down over time and it allows us to get more and more space as time goes on. The Bears end their first season under head coach Jim Conlon with a 15-4-2 overall mark. Wheaton now faces Carleton for the second time this season. Earlier in September, Wheaton defeated the Knights 2-0 at Joe Bean Stadium. The two teams had two other common opponents this season: the University of Chicago and UW-Eau Claire. Wheaton was a 3-1 winner over Chicago, while Carleton lost their match with the Maroons 1-0, and Wheaton played Eau Claire to a 2-2 draw, while the Knights were defeated by the Blugolds 3-0.
