Loras wins in OT; ONU, Stevens roll; Wheaton women to Greensboro
The action has begun in the men's and women's quarterfinals. And our analysis of the matches and predictions resides in the Daily Dose. Take a look and see how we did.

The women's Elite 8 is complete with Williams, Ithaca, William Smith, Amherst, Messiah, and Eastern. Wheaton has already punched their ticket to the Final Four. The men's group includes Christopher Newport, Messiah, Ohio Northern, Middlebury, Trinity, Amherst, Stevens and Loras.

Amherst and Messiah still have both men's and women's teams in the post-season.

At Loras, Ohio Northern continued their unlikely run into the post-season with a 2-1 upset of No. 4 Hobart College. Junior Jimmy Matuszak scored the game winner, with an assist from Nate Bascom. Dustin Connor also had a goal for the Polar Bears. Dan Riso had a goal for the Statesmen in the 73rd minute to make the match close, but Hobart could not convert in the final minutes. In the second match, after 105 minutes of play, Nick Berndt scored on a low shot to the far post to send the Duhawks to the Elite 8. Loras had tied the match late in the second half after the Augies took a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute. Loras will face Ohio Northern on Sunday.

At Stevens, Middlebury was a 1-0 winner over Carleton. Freshman Tyler Macnee scored in the 82nd minute for the win. Baer Fisher had the assist on the goal. In the second match, Stevens played Johns Hopkins to a scoreless draw and then advanced on PKs.


At Christopher Newport, things got started in exciting fashion with Messiah's 1-0 double overtime win over Montclair State. It was the season's first loss for the Red Hawks. Danny Thompson had the winning goal for the Falcons with Sean Cunningham on the assist. In the second match, Christopher Newport defeated Emory 2-0. Bryan Davis had the game winning goal for the Captains in the 34th minute. Nao Masuda added a goal for CNU in the second half. The Eagles outshot CNU 14-10 but could not get one by Captain's keeper Justin Wolfe. CNU and Messiah will meet on Sunday at 3:00 pm.

At Swarthmore, Trinity moved on to the Elite 8 with a 2-1 win over Ohio Wesleyan. And Amherst defeated the Garnet of Swarthmore 1-0. Jay Heo had the game winning goal in the 44th minute off an assist by Grayson Hollan. Trinity and Amherst meet on Sunday at 6:00 pm.

In women's action on Saturday, Wheaton used a strong consistent attack to defeat Carleton 2-1 and advance to their fourth Final Four in five years. Taryne Lee scored on a penalty kick in the 39th minute for the Thunder, and assisted on Ali Kopeman's goal in the second half. The Knights grabbed a goal in the final minutes; a misidrected clearing attempt was shot home by Sophie Wood. Carleton's Leigh-Anne Borkowski had an effective match for the Knights, breaking up several scoring threats by the Thunder. “We’re incredibly proud of what this team has done this year,” said Carleton head coach Keren Gudeman. “We earned a spot in the tournament and played better than a lot of people probably thought we would. We surpassed our own expectations from the beginning of the season, and our senior leadership was fantastic.”

Williams College defeated the College of New Jersey 2-1. After a scoreless first half, Lion's senior Jamie Kunkel scored the match's first goal in the 50th minute. Coleen Weber had the assist on the goal. The Ephs grabbed the equalizer in the 63rd minute off a goal by Sarah Walmsley. Gabrielle Woodson had the assist, and minutes later, the winner with her goal in the 78th minute. Walmsley returned the earlier favor by assisting Woodson on the winning goal. Williams finished with a 17-10 shot advantage, while Lions keeper Jessica Clarke had seven saves.

In the second match at Williams, Ithaca was a 2-0 winner over Lynchburg. Liz Masucci had the game winner in the 64th minute with an assist by Winnie Adrien. Lauren Koppel, with help from Chelsey Feldman, added a goal later for the Bombers, who outshot Lynchburg 23-10. Ithaca and Williams will face off for a ticket to the Final Four on Sunday at 1:00 pm.

At William Smith, Amherst was a 1-0 winner over Otterbein on a first half goal by Kyla Woodhouse, assisted by Natalie Ferraiolo. The hosts cruised by Johns Hopkins 3-1 and will meet Amherst on Sunday at 1:00 pm. And at Messiah, UW-Stevens Point fell to Eastern University 1-0. Jill DiRenzo had the game winner for Eastern with Nicole Grindle on the assist. The Messiah women had an easier time in their match, defeating Chicago 4-1. Erin Hench and Olivia Scott had the first two goals for the Falcons. Both were unassisted.
