Sweep! Messiah wins two titles
Messiah backup goalie Nick Blossey had the match of his life as he had three saves in the penalty kick round to help the Falcons win the national championship.

In the first half the match, Messiah scored early and then held on to lead 1-0 at the half. Danny Thompson set the momentum for the Falcons with a goal in the third minute, off a direct kick by Geoff Pezon. It took Stevens some time to adjust to the Messiah pressure, but the Ducks did begin to apply their own pressure with several shots by Terrence Johnson and Todd Sheridan. Clugston ended the half with two saves for the Falcons, who outshot Stevens, 5-4.

The second half was more evenly played with Stevens continuing to put pressure on Binger and the Messiah defense. The Ducks had seven shots to Messiah's four, and tied up the match in the 79th minute on a hard shot from Jeremy Lippel. The ball had come across from a restart and Lippel was unmarked on the far side of the goal. In overtime, both teams struggled with creating opportunities, with Messiah having the best chance late in the second overtime with a shot off the post.

Then Blossey came through huge in the PK round, pushing away three well-shot balls from the Ducks. Stevens played well, giving Messiah all it could handle, and ends its best season in program history at 19-3-4. Messiah returns to titletown with their second championship in three years and sixth overall.

In the women's final, it was a tale of two halves. At the end of the first half, Messiah led Wheaton 1-0 off a goal by Erin Hench. She scored the Falcon goal at the 27 mark off a rebound in the box, and no assist was credited on the play. Messiah had a slight advantage in possession throughout the first half and had 10 shots to Wheaton's four. Messiah's keeper Beckwith had two saves for the Falcons, while Erickson has one save for Wheaton.

But things changed as the second half got underway. At the twelve minute mark, Kacie Klynstra took a loose ball and beat a defender into the box, and then beat Erikson high to make it 2-0. Just ten minutes later, Hench added a third goal off an assist from Rachel Horning. Messiah continued to dominate as the match progressed and added two more goals to seal the title. The Falcons beat Wheaton with superior speed, foiling the Thunder's attempts to control the midfield, and an attacking style which kept Wheaton on their heels for most of the match. It is the second time in four years that Messiah has captured the crown, and sets up a Wheaton/Messiah title streak: one of the two programs has won the women's title in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and now in 2008.
