Check out our new Strength of Schedule rankings on our message board.

In UAA action, No. 21 Washington University were 2-1 winners over Brandeis. Junior John Hengel scored the eventual game winner for the Bears, who improve to 10-3 and 3-1 in the UAA: they are tied for second place with No. 18 University of Rochester. And No. 3 Middlebury lost for the first time this season 1-0 vs. NESCAC foe Bates. It is the first time Middlebury has been shut out since a loss to Keene State in October 2006. Messiah men fall to Leb Val; Carthage upends Wheaton (Ill.) women
As the season has passed the halfway mark and the conference races are heating up, every match from here on out begins to take on postseason implications. Messiah falls to 9-2-2 with the loss. George Andriko had the game winner in the 86th minute off a free kick just outside the Messiah box. Wednesday's men's scores. For the women, the WIAC, Centennial, Northwest, CCIW and MIAA all had their top teams in action on Wednesday.

In the MIAA, No. 7 Calvin were 3-0 victors over Olivet, growing to 30 their conference unbeaten streak. The Knights remain in first place at 10-2-1 and 4-0. Junior Emily Ottenhoff had her 10th goal of the season for the Knights. Rival Hope is in second place at 11-4, 5-1 after its 2-0 win over fifth place Albion. Plus, join the conversation: Discuss Division III women's soccer on our message board.

In the Northwest Conference, No. 4 Puget Sound were 8-0 victors over Pacific Lutheran. The Loggers are in first place at 11-1, 9-0. With the loss, Wheaton falls to 12-2-1, 4-1, Augustana is currently in second place and plays later in the week. The CCIW tourney begins on Nov. 5.

The WIAC always seems to come down to Stevens Point and Eau Claire, and this year is nothing different. No. 10 Stevens Point defeated UW-Oshkosh 9-0 and improves to 12-2, 6-0. The Pointers are led by WIAC Player of the Week, Amanda Prawat, who had four goals in today's win. No. 22 Eau Claire were 2-0 winners over third place UW-Stout. Freshman Rachel Nerison and senior Amy Smith had the goals for the Blugolds, who improve to 13-1-2, 5-1. Eau Claire's only loss was to Stevens Point earlier in the season, while the Pointer's losses have come at the hands of Trinity (Texas) and rival Wheaton (Ill.). The WIAC tourney kicks off on Nov. 1.

And in the Centennial, No. 9 Johns Hopkins, enjoying first place and a record of 10-0-3, 6-0 defeated second place Franklin and Marshall 2-1. The Diplomats fall to 8-3, 4-2, and haven't won at Johns Hopkins since 1992. The Blue Jays had a goal from freshman Erica Suter, this week's CC Offensive Player of the Week. Third place Swarthmore played fourth place Muhlenberg to a 1-1 tie in the other top match in the conference. The conference tourney starts on Nov. 5.

In men's action, it's a big week in the NJAC. No. 4 Montclair State, 13-0-0 and first place in the conference at 5-0, hosts Ramapo, while No. 15 and second place William Patterson defeated No. 23 and fourth place New Jersey City University 2-1. Third place Richard Stockton defeated sixth place College of New Jersey 2-1 on a late goal by Raphael Duarte. The Ospreys improve to 11-3-1 with the win. It is a big Wednesday for the NJAC, flexing its conference muscle this season with 3 teams in the Top 25.

In non-conference action, No. 6 Hobart and Ithaca College played to a scoreless draw. Hobart is now 12-0-2 on the season while the Bombers move to 7-2-2. Joel DeLass for Wheaton and Cody Alimondi for Carthage each had two goals in the match.

The NCAC wraps up our mid-week coverage with first place Ohio Wesleyan 1-0 victors over Oberlin. York defeats Messiah, Baldwin-Wallace falls
At Messiah's Shoemaker field tonight, No.3 York College defeated No.2 Messiah 2-1, handing the Falcons their first loss of the season. With the win, York remains perfect on the season at 13-0-0.

The highly anticipated match between 2 of the top programs in the country was played under the lights, and in front of a sold-out of crowd of 2500. In the match, Messiah got on the board first with a goal by senior midfielder Josh Sanders in the 23rd minute. The assist was credited to sophomore Nick Thompson. Just eight minutes later, the Spartans answered with a goal by junior Jon Ports with Lucas Emil on the assist. The score remained knotted at 1 apiece at the half. After a number of scoring opportunities for both sides, Spartan Chris Ports came through with the winning goal at the 62 minute mark, with teammate Kemal Nuspahic on the assist. Statistically, the Falcons outshot York 12-8, and held a close 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. On the flipside, York held the advantage in corner kicks, 8 to 3.

This was only the third time this season that the Spartans have allowed a goal. With the win, York moves to 13-0-0 and will travel to Rutgers-Camden on Saturday for a 3:00 pm match. For Messiah, it was the only fifth goal allowed, making this match not only a clash of the undefeated but also a contest between two of the stingiest defenses in Division III soccer. The Falcons move to 9-1-1 with the loss.

No. 7 and undefeated Baldwin-Wallace fell to Heidelberg College, 1-0. It was the first loss of the season for the Yellow Jackets, who fall to 11-1-0. In the match, the Ephs had an 18-3 shot advantage and an 8-0 lead in corner kicks. Nonetheless, the Bantams prevailed for the first time in 21 matches at Williams, improving to 7-1 on the season. McDaniel-Juniata stopped 16 minutes short
The non-conference women's soccer game on Tuesday between McDaniel and Juniata was canceled and will not be rescheduled.

With the game tied at 1 and 36:53 remaining in regulation, the teams were pulled off the field with lightning in the area.

After a 1-hour, 20-minute delay, the two teams were ready to retake the field to attempt to get the contest to at least the 70-minute mark and make it an official game but another lightning strike forced the officials to call the game.

Per NCAA regulations, because the contest did not reach its reasonable point of conclusion no statistics from the game count in the records of either team.

Weekend wrap: the fight for number 1
Trey Good had the winning goal for York
Trey Good had the winning goal for York
York College
So who is number 1? The ranks of the undefeated continued to wane this weekend and there are now only a handful of teams that can post the perfect record. Among those programs are Trinity (TX), York (PA), Montclair State, Hobart, Emory, Baldwin-Wallace, and Wittenberg. York has started the year with perhaps the strongest strength of schedule, but then Montclair State stands with the most wins at 10-0-0. And while strength of schedule is an important factor in determining a true ranking of soccer programs, finishing the season undefeated provides a leg up for how conference tourneys are seeded and thus increases the odds of a post-season AQ. We'll get a better view of the playing field as the NCAA will start releasing Regional rankings in October, which incorporates in-region strength of schedule.

No. 1 Trinity improved to 8-0-0 off a 3-1 victory over Christopher Newport. Ben Grossman had the winning goal for the Tigers. Their next ranked opponent is a road match at No. 25 Wheaton (IL) on October 18th. No. 2 Messiah continues to gain momentum as the Falcons took care of Bethany 6-0. No. 3 York defeated No. 17 Salisbury 2-1 to improve to 9-0-0. Trey Good has the winning goal for the Spartans, who are looking at a tough road trip next week as they will face Messiah on October 8th, followed a match against No.10 Rutgers-Camden.

No. 4 Middlebury took care of Colby 3-0 on two goals by Tyler Macnee to improve to 4-0-1. The Panther's GK Brian Bush has only allowed two goals thus far in the season. No. 5 Montclair State were 3-1 winners over TNCJ and face Rutgers-Camden at home next Saturday. No. 6 Hobart collected a pair of wins this weekend to move to 9-0-0. Today's match resulted in a 2-1 victory over St. Lawrence.

Baldwin-Wallace defeated Westminster (PA) 3-2 on a late goal by senior Cory Kovach. Their 9-0-0 record is the program's best start in school history. No. 10 Rutgers-Camden were 2-1 winners over Kean in OT. Sophomore Shane McGory had the game winner in the second overtime period. And No. 12 Stevens overran Elmira 8-0.

No. 13 Amherst fell at Bowdoin 4-2 and falls to 3-2, No. 14 Wittenberg moves to 10-0-0 with their 2-1 win over Allegheny, and No. 15 Loras had to fight to keep Wartburg at bay, winning 2-1 on 2 late goals.
