Press Release posted by Rose-Hulman Permalink
TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman men's soccer team earned its first trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament with a 1-0 victory over Transylvania University in the Heartland Conference tournament championship game on Saturday at Jim Rendel Field.

Sophomore Corbin Clow (Martinsville) provided the game's only goal in the 10th minute. Clow scored off a throw-in by junior Cameron Hazel (Danville, Ill/Schlarman) that was tipped by the Transylvania goalkeeper and then booted into the back of the net.

The Engineers were forced to play 10- on-11 for the final 55 minutes of play due to a foul that rendered a red card in the 35th minute. The Rose-Hulman defense held strong by allowing only two shots on goal and one Pioneer corner kick in the second half.

Senior Isaac Heyveld (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) and sophomore Andy Kruth (Cedar Park, Texas/Vista Ridge) combined on the shutout in goal making a pair of saves. Kruth came into the game in the 85th minute after an injury to Heyveld, and made a game-saving save on a shot by Brian Williams in the final minutes to preserve the Engineer win.

Junior Rhys Evans (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) led the Engineers with two shots off the bench. Transylvania outshot the Engineers 14-6, led by three shots from Williams, Tony Spero and Stu Hampson.

The victory marks the first time in school history that a Rose-Hulman men's soccer team has captured a conference tournament title and earned an NCAA tournament appearance. The women's soccer squad reached the NCAA Division III Tournament last season before recording another winning campaign this fall.

The win improves Rose-Hulman to 14-4-3 on the season, while Transylvania ended their season with an 11-6-1 mark. The Engineers will find out their NCAA opponent and site when the NCAA Tournament bracket is released on Monday approximately 9 a.m.
