Wartburg gains seventh straight NCAA bid
Nov 08, 2009
DUBUQUE – A golden goal from junior midfielder/defender Luke Prater in the 108th minute sent Wartburg to its second straight and sixth overall Iowa Conference tournament championship Saturday, Nov. 7. Head coach T.J. Buchholz’ Knights (15-4-1) knocked off top-seeded Loras 2-1 in double overtime at the Rock Bowl.
Prater’s goal ended another classic version of the annual clashes between the Knights and Duhawks. Loras held a 1-0 lead early in the second half after a goal from Miguel Bonilla in the 50th minute, but the Orange and Black came back with a score from junior defender/midfielder Kyle McKenna in the 78th to send the game into two frenetic extra sessions.
The Knights trailed their hosts by just one in the shots department (19-18). Freshman forward Brandon Cook fired four at Loras’ goal and also added two assists.
Buchholz’ team will find out their NCAA Division III national opponent Monday morning, Nov. 9. It will be their seventh consecutive appearance in the national tournament.
