Eau Claire, Wis. - After falling behind 1-0 at halftime, the Wheaton women's soccer team refocused and poured on the offense in the second half for a 3-1 victory over Carroll University in the first round of NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday.

The Thunder improved to 19-3-1 and advance to face Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 1:00 PM on Saturday. The Pioneers ended their season with an 13-6-2 record.

Carroll struck first at 15:43 in the first half. Wheaton goalkeeper Ingrid Erickson's throw to her defender was intercepted by Kendell Uttech, who took the ball in one-on-one for the goal.

Wheaton pressed the attack all half and held a 12-4 shot advantage, but went into halftime down 1-0.

"I told them our chances will come," Wheaton head coach Pete Felske said. "I feel like I'm repeating myself, but we just give up bad goals. We told them to keep their heads up and brought them back into focus. We took the other team for granted early."

Thunder responded and struck quick in the second half. Three-and-a-half minutes into the second half, reserve forward Erin Hodina netted the tying goal unassisted. The senior led the team with eight shots on the game.

"Hodie played a great game for us," Felske said. "She covered a lot of ground and gave us a lot of energy. She did a beautiful job coming off the bench."

With momentum on their side, the Thunder kept pouring on the offense. Carrie Kishaba scored the go-ahead goal at 68:50 on an assist from Jami Herrmann. Only 74 seconds later, Taryne Lee scored her school-record 28th goal with another assist from Herrmann.

Wheaton held a 30-7 shot advantage in the game, as well as a 16-1 advantage on corner kicks. Carroll didn't get a corner kick until the final two minutes of the game.

Cody Callender and Uttech took six of the Pioneer's seven shots.

Erickson made two saves while allowing one goal. Carroll goalkeeper Ashlee Reinke allowed three goals while making seven saves.

Felske said his team learned a valuable lesson from the stiff test by Carroll. "There's not a team we can take lightly from here on out," he said.
