Randolph Men's Soccer Drops ODAC Contest to Hampden-Sydney 2-1
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College picked up their first road win of the season Tuesday evening as H-SC knocked off the Randolph College men's soccer squad 2-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play from WildCat Stadium.
The loss for Randolph (8-2/1-2 ODAC) was its second consecutive after reeling off eight straight victories to start the season. The Tigers (5-4/1-2 ODAC) struck first, as Robert Stephens posted his second goal of the year, as he headed a cross from Bo Burns past Randolph keeper Carter Smith (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley).
Hampden-Sydney doubled its lead nine minutes later, as Stephens netted his second goal of the evening on a shot from the top of the 18. Randolph trimmed the deficit to one at 27:43 of the contest, as Corey Sindle (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester) chalked up his ODAC-leading eighth goal of the season with help from Jacob Lusczek (Fredericksburg, VA/Chancellor).
With the goal, Sindle became the WildCats all-time leading goal and point scorer, surpassing current Randolph senior Timmy Songer (Windsor, VA/Windsor). It was also his fourth goal in the last five games.
After halftime, the WildCats took control of the game outshooting their visitors 7-2 over the last 45 minutes. H-SC's Duncan Oliphant made three saves in the second half to preserve the lead, but with less than a minute to go Randolph made its last ditch effort. Sindle gathered a loose ball and ripped a shot but it clanged it off the post and H-SC hung on for the win.
Randolph and Hampden-Sydney each tallied 11 shots on the evening, while Randolph had a slight 2-1 edge in corner kicks. The game was physical, with the two teams combining for 34 fouls and six yellow cards. Smith finished with five saves in for Randolph, while Oliphant also stopped five shots.
The WildCats will entertain Washington & Lee University Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in more league play from WildCat Stadium. Saturday is also Family Weekend and Homecoming at Randolph College, and drinks and food will be served to all alumnae and alumni, friends and family.
