Pioneers throttle Berea in opener, 5-0
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Sparked by three goals in the first 13 minutes of action Friday, Transylvania handed Berea a 5-0 thrashing in the men's soccer opener for both teams at Thomas Field.
It was the first game in the season-opening Little Caesar's College Showcase. Transy will face Trine at 1 p.m. Saturday with Berea taking on Trine at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Saturday start time was moved up due to the threat of storms later in the day.
Kyle Smith converted a pair of Christian King passes for two goals within a 35-second span to get the Pioneers off and running. His first goal came at the 8:09 mark and the second at 8:44.
Kevin Blakely made it 3-0 with Smith handing out the assist in the 13th minute. Transy led 4-0 at halftime whenEric Froschauer popped in a drop shot over the keeper from 20 yards out in the 39th minute.
The game remained 4-0 until Vinny Paiva took a pass from Bryce Burton after Burton beat his defender, leaving Paiva open for a goal to the lower right.
Taylor Nossokoff played the first half in goal for Transy and was credited with one save. Cody Waltrip played the second half and had a pair of saves. Transy has 12 shots, including nine on goal, while Berea had four shots, three on goal.
