New Paltz Men’s Soccer Defeats Oswego 3-0 in SUNYAC Opener
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Charlie Versen (Dobbs Ferry, NY/The Masters School) notched two goals to lift the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer squad past SUNY Oswego 3-0 on Friday afternoon in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener.
The match was scoreless until the 30th minute when Versen tacked in his first goal of the game and second of the year off a feed from freshman forward Luke Dole (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem) to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
After playing nearly 50 minutes without a score, Dole enjoyed a goal of his own thanks to an assist by senior back Arthur Angst (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) to hand the Hawks a 2-0 cushion.
Versen wrapped up the offense for the home team as he deflected a failed boot by the Oswego keeper and found the back of the net to give New Paltz a 3-0 advantage. The Hawks outshot the Lakers 14-8 on the afternoon and held a 7-3 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Versen led all players with five shots coming off the bench while Dole and junior midfielder Ben Zilka (Levittown, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) added two shots each. Junior keeper John Guzzo (Carle Place, NY/Carle Place) made two stops in net for the Hawks.
The Hawks remain undefeated on the year, improving to 4-0-4, 1-0-0 SUNYAC, and will host SUNY Cortland tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Lakers fall to 3-5-0, 0-1-0 SUNYAC and travel to SUNY Oneonta.
