Cortland edges men’s soccer, 1-0
CORTLAND, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (7-2, 2-1 SUNYAC) scored in the 17th minute and made it stand up as the Red Dragons downed the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (5-3-1, 0-2 SUNYAC) 1-0 on Friday afternoon.
The Bears opened the contest aggressively, but weren't able to grab the lead. Cortland broke through on its first shot of the game. At the 16:48 mark, Nick Tata finished a free kick off the foot of Chris Hettler to make it 1-0. Potsdam kept pressing after the goal, but trailed 1-0 at the break despite a 6-2 advantage in shots.
The Bears tested Red Dragons goalie Connor Young four times in the second half, but couldn't find the equalizer. Cortland edged Potsdam 6-4 in shots in the final 45 minutes, but only one managed to find the goal and was handled by Bears freshman goalie Jake Mitchell (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport).
Mitchell finished with one save on the day and Young stopped seven shots for the shutout. Potsdam outshot the Red Dragons 10-8 on the day.
The Bears look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Oswego for a 1 p.m. contest with the Lakers.
