New Paltz Men’s Soccer Clinches Playoff Berth with 1-0 Win Over Buffalo State in Regular Season Finale
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team closed out its regular season with a 1-0 win over Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon to clinch a playoff berth in the 2016 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament. This marks the Hawks' first tournament appearance since 2012.
In the 43rd minute, senior midfielder Charlie Versen (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./The Masters School) intercepted a misplaced ball sent to the Bengals' keeper to find the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season and secure the final 1-0 victory for New Paltz.
The Hawks outshot the Bengals (10-6-1, 5-4-0 SUNYAC), 9-6, and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Seven different New Paltz athletes each recorded one shot while freshman forward Luke Dole (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) fired off two shots to lead the offensive charge. Junior goalie John Guzzo (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) earned his fifth shutout and made two saves between the pipes.
Junior midfielder/forward Tristian Myers recorded three shots with two on goal to lead the Bengals' offense. Sophomore goalkeeper Andreas Queen made two stops in the net to earn the loss.
New Paltz (8-3-7, 4-3-2 SUNYAC) enters the 2016 SUNYAC Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will play the No. 4 seeded Bengals again, this time on the road, on Satruday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m.
