Stormy Petrels Improve to 3-0 with 2-0 Seahawk Classic Victory over St. Mary's
The Oglethorpe men's soccer team got their stay at the Seahawk Classic in St. Mary's City, Maryland, off to a good start Saturday afternoon, as they defeated homestanding St. Mary's 2-0 with a pair of second-half goals. The victory improved the Stormy Petrels to 3-0 on the season.
With the game locked in a scoreless tie at halftime, the Petrels quickly pulled ahead, as senior forward Devon Patterson took a pass from junior midfielder Ryan Marcano on a breakaway and slotted it home in the 46th minute, giving his team a 1-0 lead almost immediately after the resumption of the game. It served as a culmination of how the game went in the first half, as the Petrels outshot the homestanding Seahawks 8-3 during the opening period and took three corner kicks to none for St. Mary's.
After Oglethorpe took the lead, they had to withstand a better half from the Seahawks, as the home side outshot the Petrels 8-4 over the course of the second 45 minutes. However, Oglethorpe senior goalkeeper proved equal to the task, keeping the visitors ahead with three saves.
His efforts were rewarded in the 86th minute, when the Petrels put the game away with a Marcano goal from 18 yards out. He blasted a ball past the St. Mary's goalkeeper into the upper-right corner of the net, putting the game on ice.
"I thought we played well for the most part, and it's always good to get a win," said Oglethorpe head coach Jon Akin. "I was happy with how we were able to finish the game off late, and persevered after we were unable to score in the first half. We've got a big test tomorrow against Salisbury, so we'll have to recover quickly and be ready."
The Petrels will take on the national power Sea Gulls Sunday at 2 p.m. from St. Mary's City in the second day of the Seahawk Classic. After that, they'll return home for their home opener against Truett McConnell Wednesday at 5 p.m.
