Rowan Men's Soccer Upset By Cabrini, 1-0 In Overtime, In NCAA First Round
GLASSBORO, NJ – Cabrini University midfielder Andre Justin tallied the game-winning goal with 3:20 remaining in the first overtime period as the Cavaliers upset the Rowan University men's soccer team, 1-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Championship Tournament.
Cabrini was awarded a free kick 25 yards away from goal. Midfielder Ben Roda (sr. Allentown, PA/Emmaus) sent the ball into the area and Justin (so. Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Reg.) headed the ball over the charging goalkeeper and into the net. The Cavaliers (11-8-1) advance to the second round, where they will face Johns Hopkins University on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. The Blue Jays defeated DeSales University, 2-0 in the other first round matchup. The Profs end the year with a 17-4-1 record.
Much of the play was in the Cabrini end of the field, as Rowan dominated the shot count by a 42-2 margin. However, the Profs placed just 11 of those on goal and could not find the back of the net. Cabrini goalkeeper Mike Gould (so. Huntingdon Valley, PA/Lower Moreland) stopped all 11 shots he faced for his seventh shutout. Rowan goalie Erik Checkur (jr. Wantage, NJ/High Point Reg.) made one save.
