MOUNT BERRY, Ga. — In a physical match the saw 30 fouls and five yellow cards, Berry College defeated Marietta College, 2-0, in the final match of the Berry Invitational Sunday (Sept. 9) afternoon. The loss drops Marietta to 2-2 on the season, while the Vikings improve to 4-1 overall.
"On this day it just seemed that Berry wanted it more and that is disappointing," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "We did create some chances but never could get that quality look on goal. Credit Berry for taking us out of our game and taking their chances."
Jack Giles put Berry in front with a goal in the 35th minute. Steven Moore sent a pass to the middle of the box where Giles finished it for the game winner. The Vikings added a late goal by Jake Williamson in the 88th minute to ice the game. Moore picked up the assist on Williamson's goal as well.
Other than on the scoreboard the game was statistically even. Each team took five shots in the first half and nine in the second 45 minutes. Berry did hold a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
Dakota Penquite had four saves in goal for the Pioneers, while Carson Oakes posted four saves in net for Berry.
Marietta travels to Kenyon College on Wednesday (Sept. 12) for a 4 p.m. match against the preseason No. 22 ranked Lords.
