Stormy Petrels Score Two Second-Half Goals to Knock off Crosstown-Rival Emory for Second Straight Season

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team got a big out-of-conference road victory Tuesday evening, defeating the crosstown-rival Emory Eagles 2-1 at the Woodruff PE Center. The victory improved the Stormy Petrels to 10-2 on the season, moved their winning streak to nine games, and served as a potentially big win for the team's resume looking forward to the postseason.

The Petrels used a pair of second-half goals to vault past the homestanding Eagles, who played the first half to a 0-0 deadlock despite being outshot 8-3 over the course of the period. The visitors wasted no time breaking the deadlock to start the second half, though. Freshman forward Angel Guevara forced a poor clearance from the Emory goalkeeper in the 50th minute, collected the ball, and calmly put a shot past him to give his team a 1-0 lead.

Oglethorpe junior goalkeeper Scott Zoino made a fantastic save on a shot that came in low and to his right in the 53rd minute, then made another save moments later to keep his team in the lead.

The Eagles found an answer in the 58th minute, though, as they sent a long ball over the top that found forward Tyler Walsh in a position to beat Zoino. He did and tied the game, 1-1.

The two teams traded several more scoring chances after that, but the Petrels broke through with a game-winner in the 73rd minute. Freshman forward Abraham Lopez collected a pass from senior midfielder Jon Guy about 30 yards from goal, dribbled through a couple of defenders, and rifled a shot past Emory goalkeeper Cole Gallagher to give his team a 2-1 advantage.

The home side only managed one shot after that, and the Petrels held on for the 2-1 victory.

The Petrels had several chances to pick up the opening goal in the first half, but weren't able to find the back of the net. Junior forward Gabriel Alvarez was stopped on consecutive point-blank shots in the 19th minute. Then in the 33rd minute, Guy fired a shot off the left post, Lopez collected the rebound but had his shot saved by Gallagher, and junior forward Matt Ward followed up by putting his shot just wide. None of Emory's three shots in the first half were on target.

Oglethorpe outshot Emory 14-9 over the course of the game, with the two teams each firing six shots over the course of the second half. The Petrels outshot Emory 8-3 in shots on goal, while Emory won four corner kicks to Oglethorpe's three.

The Petrels will face Berry Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in Mount Berry. It will serve as the final game of the regular season for Oglethorpe. After that, they'll get set to take on Hendrix in the first round of the SAA tournament the following weekend.
