Westerville, Ohio, November 12, 2010 – The Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team defeated Allegheny College 2-1 in the opening round of the 2010 NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday, Nov. 12, in Westerville, Ohio.

Washington U. (11-7-2) takes on host and No. 3 ranked Otterbein on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 1 p.m., in the second round. Otterbein posted a 1-0 victory over Calvin College in the first game on Friday. The winner of Saturday's contest advances to the Sectional semifinals.

"We came out to play today,' said third-year head coach Jim Conlon. "It was important to give a great effort today. We wanted to move the ball and execute the game plan and that is what we did."

Freshman Becky Berels got the Bears on the scoreboard first with a goal at 16:55. Junior Emma Brown took the ball down to the corner, made a nice move around to defenders and sent the ball into the goalmouth where Berels tapped it in. The goal for Berels was her third of the season. Washington U. held onto a 1-0 lead at halftime as each team recorded six shots.

Sophomore Emily Gosche made it 2-0 just three minutes and 17 seconds into the second half. Senior Julie Tembunkiart sent a cross into the box where junior Lee Ann Felder went up to the challenge a header. The ball went off Allegheny goalkeeper Emily Karr and bounced out to the top of the box, where Gosche hammered home a volley from the top of the box. The goal for Gosche was her third of the season and career.

Allegheny (14-5-2) trimmed the advantage to 2-1 at 83:56 as Abby Silvester headed home a corner kick Dayna Rowe. Washington U. outshot Allegheny, 11-5, in the second half and 17-11 for the game.

"We stepped hard to the ball today and kept the pressure up the entire game," said Gosche. "Scoring early changed the tide in the game and gave us some confidence. The second goal showed that we were not going to sit on that one-goal lead."

Sophomore goalkeeper Clara Jaques made three saves in the victory, picking up the 26th victory of her career. Karr made 10 saves in the defeat for Allegheny. The Gators were making their third NCAA appearance in school history, and is now 0-3 all-time in NCAA Tournament play.
