Adrian’s Barker, Kalamazoo’s Short, Gateley Named MIAA Players of the Week in Women’s Soccer
ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Adrian forward Sam Barker, Kalamazoo forward Jackie Short and Kalamazoo centerback Jenn Gateley its Players of the Week in women’s soccer for games played through October 22.
Offensive Players of the Week
Barker, a sophomore from Temperance (Bedford HS), scored four goals, including two game-winners, as the Bulldogs won three straight games to open up a five-point lead in the MIAA standings. She scored the winning goal in a 4-3 win over Calvin and a 3-2 victory over Hope, and now has 10 game-winning tallies this season, the most of any college player (any division) in the country. She is being honored as Player of the Week for the third time this season and fourth time in her career.
Short, a junior from Troy (Athens HS), scored three goals, including two game-winners, as the Hornets won all three of their games for the week. She score twice in a 5-1 victory over Albion and scored the game’s only goal in a 1-0 win over defending MIAA champion Alma. Short is being honored as Player of the Week for second time this season and third time in her career.
Defensive Player of the Week
Gateley, a senior from Livonia (Stevenson HS), anchored a Hornet defense that allowed just one goal in three games for the week and posted two shutouts. Her efforts led to shutout wins over Saint Mary’s, 2-0, and Alma, 1-0. Gateley is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
