ST.
PAUL, Minn. – A crazy final day of women's soccer play in the
MIAC resulted in co-champions and the final spots and seeds of the
2011 MIAC Women's Soccer Playoff field. Saint Benedict and Carleton
share the conference's regular season championship and Concordia
and Macalester round out the four-team postseason.
Carleton used a final-day win and a loss by the Blazers to move
into a tie for first-place. However, Saint Benedict beat the
Knights during the regular season, and will be the No. 1 seed in
the playoffs. Carleton will be the No. 2 seed. The team that beat
Saint Benedict Saturday - Concordia - took sole posession of third
place with the win and will be the third seed in the playoffs, and
Macalester used a 2-0 win over Gustavus Saturday to claim the
fourth and final playoff spot.
The playoffs will open Tuesday with a pair of 2 p.m. semifinal
contests. The Blazers will host one semifinal in St. Joseph, with
Macalester coming to town to open the postseason. The other
semifinal is a rematch of last year's Playoff championship game
with Concordia traveling to Carleton to relive last year's thriller
that went to penalty kicks. The two winners will advance to
Saturday's championship game with the highest-remaining seed
hosting the final. The winner of the Playoff championships also
receives the MIAC's automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Division III
Women's Soccer Tournament.
The MIAC has set up a home page for the 2011 MIAC Women's Soccer
Playoffs, featuring the seeds, schedules, links to info about each
team and tiebreaker criteria.
