Aurora University tops Wheaton College, 2-1
Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton Thunder women's soccer team lost a 2-1 decision to visiting Aurora University on Thursday night at Joe Bean Stadium. Tonight's victory was Aurora's first-ever win in 10 meetings with Wheaton.
Aurora remains undefeated with a 10-0-1 record this fall. The Thunder fall to 8-2-0 on the season. Wheaton will open CCIW play on Saturday night at North Park University.
Aurora's #Nicole Wolfe# scored the first goal of the match when she netted a score for the guests in the 25th minute. Wolfe put a shot in from about 10-yards out off of a Raquel Rodriguez assist. Thunder senior #Keri Shannon# scored an equalizing goal to tie the match at 1-1 in the 41st minute. Shannon blasted in a shot from 20 yards out that when the opposite corner of the net to even the match.
Aurora had a player fouled in the penalty area in the 62nd minute to setup a penalty kick for the Spartans. Aurora's Nicci Bermudes converted the penalty kick opportunity as she shot the ball to the right of Thunder goalkeeper #Kelsey Graham# to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead. Wheaton out-shot the Spartans 14-6 in the second half, including five shots on goal, but the Thunder could not score the crucial tying goal.
Wheaton took 23 shots in the match, with 11 shots for the Spartans. The Thunder attempted 10 corner kick opportunities and Aurora was awarded two corner kicks. Graham made two saves and allowed two goals. Liz Wong started the match in goal for the Spartans as she allowed one goal, with three saves in 57 minutes of work. Amada Liss entered the match in the 57th minute when Wong left the contest with an injury. Liss made three saves and did not allow a goal in her 33 minutes in between the pipes.
