For the past three seasons, the Loras College Duhawks have snatched both the regular season and conference championships in the Iowa Conference. Saturday's win still had great significance. After defeating the Spartans just 11 days ago, the two teams squared off, this time though, for the right to represent the Iowa Conference in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
While Loras was selected as the preseason favorite to claim the IIAC title, the first weeks of their season were nothing short of difficult. After going 3-3 in their first six matches, Loras would finish out the season by going 12-1 over their next 13 games, with their lone loss coming to a very talented Wheaton squad.
With the Spartans serving as the last roadblock between the Duhawks and the NCAA Division III Tournament, the two set off for another battle in the Rock Bowl.
In the 5th minute, Ailish Rispin tallied her 5th goal of the season from 20 yards out. Unable to score in the remaining 40 minutes, the Duhawks were left with only the one goal lead at halftime. Lynn DeVriese added what would eventually serve as the game winner in the 57th minute from 10 yards out. Hillary Wilson would increase the Loras lead once more with a sharp one-timer from Taryn Petersen in the 70th minute. The Spartans would get a goal back in the 86th minute, but that would be all they could muster.
For Loras, they now await Monday's NCAA Selection Show to learn of where and when they will play to kick off the 2012 Women's Soccer Tournament. The show will begin at 12:30 pm central time on NCAA.com.
