Mustangs Score First but are Downed by Sharks in GNAC Opener

More news about: Mount Ida women's team

BOSTON, Mass. – Mount Ida took the lead just six minutes into play on Saturday afternoon in their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer opener against Simmons, but the Sharks came back to notch a 5-2 victory.

Briana Tomaselli (Warwick, R.I.) and Rachael Reese (Santa Cruz, Calif.) scored for the Green and White, who fall to 1-4 on the season, while sophomores Ali Berkman (Natick, Mass.) and Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) led Simmons to the victory, improving their record to 3-2 on the year.

Mount Ida took the lead when Tomaselli scored for the third straight game, taking the pass from freshman Hannah Brackett (Voorheesville, N.Y.), who collected her second assist of the season.

The Sharks knotted the game at one with a tip by Gilbert off a throw in by senior Desh Perera (Reading, Mass.). With under five minutes to play in the half, Berkman converted a free kick opportunity, firing a shot past Mustangs goalkeeper Rebecca Beaulieu (Weare, N.H.) to close out the half with the Sharks up, 2-1.

Beaulieu would go on to make ten saves in between the pipes for the Mustangs, who were outshot 32-13.

In the second half, Gilbert gave the Sharks a two-goal lead off a header with an assist from Perera off a corner kick, but less than two minutes later the Mustangs had closed the gap back to a goal, as Reese took a pass from Sierra Legge (Schodack Landing, N.Y.) and beat Sharks keeper Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y.) low short side.

Unfortunately, just two minutes after Reese's strike, first year Alexis Eusebio (Dartmouth, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal off a header to bring the score to 4-2. The final tally of the game was shot by Berkman, who defeated two Mustang defenders for the score.

The Sharks held a slight 3-2 advantage in corner kicks, and Hayes made six saves in the win.

The Mustangs host Nichols on Sep. 19 at 3:30PM in a non-conference game at Alumni Field.

The Sharks return to the field on Tuesday, Sep. 17 at home versus Emerson at 7PM.
