Mustangs Back in the Win Column With Late Heroics at Norwich
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Mount Ida and Norwich played 83 minutes of scoreless women's soccer on Wednesday night before a flurry of offense and a converted penalty kick gave the Mustangs a 2-1 overtime win in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
Junior midfielder Sierra Legge (Schodack Landing, N.Y.) scored 8:15 into the first overtime on a penalty kick to lift Mount Ida (3-12-0, 2-8-0 GNAC) to the road victory.
Legge, who has five goals on the year and has all of Mount Ida's game-winners this year, buried the penalty kick attempt into the bottom right corner of the net after Mustang senior forward Briana Tomaselli (Warwick, R.I.) drew the PK attempt.
Tomaselli was contacted by Norwich freshman goalkeeper Holly Lutz (Hamburg, N.J.) at the top of the penalty box, which drew the call.
After battling for 83 scoreless minutes, both teams scored goals in the 84th minute, just 50 seconds apart. Mount Ida took a 1-0 lead when Tomaselli scored her 10th goal of the season off an assist from Rachael Reese (Santa Cruz, Calif.).
Norwich answered right back on a corner kick when senior defender Liz Chapdelaine served the ball in from the right and junior midfielder Alex Frank (Medford, N.J.) one-time side volleyed the ball into the net and past Mount Ida goalkeeper Rebecca Beaulieu (Weare, N.H.) to knot the match up at one.
Frank became the first NU player other than Baylie Lamarre (Tyngsboro, Mass.) to score a goal this season.
Mount Ida outshot Norwich 25-2, and each team had just one corner kick opportunity.
Lutz made 11 saves in her first collegiate start in goal, while Beaulieu picked up the victory without recording a save.
Mount Ida will wrap up their GNAC schedule on Saturday when they host Suffolk at Alumni Field at 12:00 pm as part of a home doubleheader.
Norwich (1-14, 1-9 GNAC) wraps up the GNAC regular season on the road on Saturday at the Univ. of St, Joseph (Conn.) at 1 p.m. and close out the 2013 season at home, next Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. against Plattsburgh State.
