Sagehens Beat Cal Lu, Extend Win Streak to Seven
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Sagehens took the opening lead midway through the first half, and the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team never looked back, beating the Cal Lutheran Regals 2-0 Wednesday evening.
Season Impact: The win guarantees the Sagehens a home match in the first round of the SCIAC Postseason and secures at least a second place finish in the regular season. Pomona-Pitzer improves their record to 11-1-2 overall and 9-0-2 in conference play.
The Regals drop to 11-3-3 overall and 5-3-3 in the SCIAC. Cal Lutheran currently sits in third place.
For the Sagehens, who have yet to give up a goal at home, the advantage of playing on their home field is nothing to overlook.
"I told them this is just a step closer to earning our next goal which is finishing first in the regular season," said Head Coach Jennifer Scanlon. "We've played well at home all year, keeping a clean sheet, so getting to play here in the semi-finals, and hopefully the finals, is a key stop on the way to our ultimate goal which is winning the SCIAC Tournament."
Natasha Thornton-Clark got the Sagehens on the board first, grabbing a pass on the right side of the field, dribbling to the top of the box, and connecting off her left foot to the left side of the goal.
For a moment it looked like the Regals would finally be the team to score on Pomona-Pitzer at home when they had an open shot inside the box. But the shot deflected off the crossbar, the Regals gathered the rebound and shot again only for the ball to go off the crossbar for a second time.
Corey Goelz finished the game with five saves. Goelz leads the SCIAC with a .957 save percentage
Next Match: The Sagehens celebrate Senior Day this Saturday at home in an 11 a.m. match against the Chapman Panthers.
