Murray strikes twice as Bears bury Spartans in double OT, 4-3
BUFFALO, N.Y.—Junior midfielder Rylie Murray (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) scored twice as the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (1-0) defeated D'Youville College (0-1) 4-3 in double overtime in the first round of the Spartan Classic. Juniors Olivia Seamans (Bolton Landing, N.Y./Bolton) and Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) also scored for the Bears. Sophomore goalie Delphine Léonard (Montreal, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) earned the victory in her debut.
Murray wasted no time getting Potsdam on the board. She struck just 2:11 into the contest from just outside the box. The Bears outshot the Spartans 6-3 in the half, but D'Youville rallied in the 41st minute. Makenna Magee evened the score with a tally at the 4:01 mark.
Potsdam controlled much of the play in the final 45 minutes of regulation, but the Spartans managed to answer every Bear score. Freshman defender Maeve Morrissey (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) recorded her first collegiate point with an assist on a Seamans' marker in the 51st minute to make it 2-1. Just 55 seconds later, Magan Magee tied the game on a long shot. Falsion put Potsdam up again with 34:04 left in second, but Makenna Magee made it 3-3 in the 72nd minute. Falsion and senior forward Jaci Morr (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) each had opportunities in the final 1:41, but D'Youville keeper Megan Dulniak made both saves to force overtime.
In the first 10-minute extra session, the Bears edged the Spartans 3-2 in shots, but neither team managed one on goal. The final overtime came down to the wire. Potsdam controlled the play and with just 29 seconds remaining, was awarded a free kick just outside the box. Murray launched a rocket that beat Dulniak and gave the Bears the victory.
Dulniak finished with four saves on the afternoon. Léonard finished with one stop. Potsdam outshot D'Youville 24-7 and finished with a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bears are back at it again tomorrow in Buffalo when they take on Hilbert College at 12:15 p.m. looking for the tournament title. Potsdam is 3-0 all-time against the Hawks.
