Stormy Petrels Blank Wesleyan 2-0 for Season-Opening Win

The Oglethorpe women's soccer team started the new season off on the right foot Friday night at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, defeating the visiting Wesleyan Wolves, 2-0. After a first half which saw neither team find the back of the net, the Stormy Petrels came out for the second half with a purpose, scoring a pair of goals and creating several other scoring chances.

The Petrels outshot the Wolves 12-1 in the first half, but the home side lacked a finishing touch in front of goal. They got to work early in the second half, though, as junior forward Kayla Trice pounced on a loose ball in front of goal in the 56th minute to give Oglethorpe a 1-0 lead.

They then doubled up in the 70th minute, as senior forward Nicolette Andrey finished off a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Maddie Cornell. Cornell hit the ball low and toward the near post, and Andrey was there to redirect it into the net.

The Petrels continued on the attack after that, and Wesleyan never really found a chance to get back into the game. Oglethorpe outshot Wesleyan 17-2 for the contest overall, including a 9-0 mark in shots on goal. Oglethore also took six corner kicks to Wesleyan's two, and forced the Wolves goalkeeper into seven saves.

Andrey tied for the team lead in shots with three, joining freshman midfielders Lauren Kirby and Tress Southard at that mark. Southard put all three of her shots on target, while Andrey hit the mark with two of hers.

This marks the second season in a row in which Oglethorpe won their season opener. They defeated Agnes Scott 2-1 at the Oglethorpe Track and Field in last year's first game.

The Petrels will be right back in action on Sunday at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, when they'll welcome Brevard to town for another non-conference tilt at 3 p.m. The two teams last met on Sept. 6, 2016, at a neutral site in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The Tornados came away with a 4-0 victory on that day, so the Petrels will be looking for a little revenge on Sunday.
