Oglethorpe Falls on Late Goal at Huntingdon

The Oglethorpe women's soccer team fell 1-0 to the homestanding Huntingdon Hawks in Montgomery, Alabama, Wednesday night. Huntingdon used an 87th-minute goal to edge the Stormy Petrels on a night where the start of the game was delayed an hour and 15 minutes by lightning.

Once the game started, the first half was a relatively even affair. The Hawks outshot the Petrels 4-3 over the opening 45 minutes, but neither team was able to dent the scoreboard. The game started to turn in Huntingdon's favor in the second half, though, as the Hawks outshot the Petrels 13-1 over the period. However, Oglethorpe sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Bolas proved equal to the task of keeping the visitors in the game, as she recorded an impressive 13 saves. Ten of those stops came in the second half.

The game was still scoreless headed into the final five minutes of the game, but the Hawks broke through in the 87th minute. They scored off a corner kick with just over three minutes remaining in the contest. Oglethorpe had a couple of corner kicks of their own after the Huntingdon goal, giving them a chance to score the equalizer, but nothing came of either one.

For the game, the Hawks outshot the Petrels 17-4, including a 14-2 mark in shots on goal. Oglethorpe took four corner kicks to Huntingdon's three. Sophomore midfielder Sam Thornton took a pair of shots for Oglethorpe, while junior midfielder Jalisa Kassam and sophomore midfielder Maddie Cornell took a shot apiece.

With the loss, the Petrels dropped to 3-2 on the young season. They'll be back in action in the Atlanta area on Saturday afternoon, when they'll travel down the road to Decatur to take on Agnes Scott at 2 p.m.
