Women’s soccer beats Saint Mary's for third-straight victory
NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Junior Mackenzie Schoustra posted two goals and an assist, while sophomore Rose Sandell and senior Emily Lecyadded goals for the St. Olaf College women's soccer team in a 4-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory against Saint Mary's University (Minn.) on Saturday at Rolf Mellby Field.
After Saint Mary's (4-2-0, 0-1-0 MIAC) got a goal from Maura Michener in the fifth minute, St. Olaf (3-1-1, 1-0-0 MIAC) scored three times in a little over eight minutes to lead 3-1 at the half, with Schoustra having a hand on all three first-half goals. Sandell added her first-career goal early in the second half to complete the scoring.
After Michener's opening goal, the Oles responded less than eight minutes later with an unassisted goal from Schoustra in the box to account for her second goal of the season and tie the game at 1-1.
Just four minutes later, Schoustra scored her second goal of the afternoon, finding the top-left corner off a pass from first-year Grace Maxwell from the right side of the field. Schoustra followed her second goal just minutes later by finding Lecy in the center of the box for Lecy's first goal of the season to give the Oles a 3-1 advantage at the half.
In the second half, Sandell found space from six yards outside the box and found the top-left corner of the goal to stretch the St. Olaf lead to 4-1 in the 53rd minute. Less than seven minutes later, the Oles nearly scored a fifth, but Hayley Hoffman hit the far post with a shot.
Sophomore goalie Brynne Davis recorded two saves in the game to record her third-straight win in net, while first-year goalkeeper Rachel Nelsonmade her season debut, playing nearly the final 20 minutes. Saint Mary's recorded six shots in the game, while the Oles posted 22, including 10 shots on goal.
