Toms win steamy soccer clash in 2 OT, 2-1
Kate Heimer scored 2:25 into the second overtime to let No. 16-ranked Tommie Women's Soccer outlast St. Ben's, 2-1, in MIAC play on a steamy morning at UST's South Field. It was the conference opener for the Tommies.
St. Thomas scored in the sixth minute on a goal from Megan Zickert (assisted by Brie Bourdage), but the Bennies (2-3, 1-1 MIAC) tied the game with a goal in the 43rd minute by Brianna Griffin.
After a scoreless first overtime marked by scoring chances each way, UST senior Mallory DeBoom dished to Heimer on the left side at the top of the box and her blast found the back of the net to cap the gam at 102:25.
With a heat index approaching 100, both teams gutted out a hard-fought contest that neither squad could settle in regulation or the first overtime. UST had an 8-4 edge in shots on goal in the contest.
St. Thomas (5-1, 1-0) has won five consecutive games.
The game was moved up three hours to get ahead of the worst of the dangerous heat and humidity. Conditions were more challenging by the time the contest concluded at 12:25 p.m.
