Oglethorpe Earns 1-1 Draw after Late Goal in Birmingham

The Oglethorpe women's soccer team earned its second consecutive road result Sunday afternoon in Birmingham, Alabama, as they got a late goal from sophomore midfielder Maddie Cornell to send it to overtime and then hung on for the 1-1 tie through the extra 20 minutes. The result moved the Stormy Petrels to 4-8-1 overall and 1-2-1 in SAA play.

The Panthers had a shot advantage as the game went into the second half, but neither team had been able to dent the scoreboard. Birmingham-Southern changed that with a penalty kick in the 75th minute, though, and had a late 1-0 lead. They went for the kill late, peppering sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Bolas with shots, but she came up with three big saves in quick succession to keep her team in the game. That paid off in the 87th minute, when Cornell unleashed a shot from outside the box and buried it in the top-left corner of the net, tying the game at 1-1. Bolas had to make one more save in the 89th minute to send the game to extra time, and that's just what she did.

Birmingham-Southern outshot Oglethorpe 9-4 in the extra periods, and Bolas was again called on to keep Oglethorpe in the game. She saved each of the three shots on goal she faced over the extra 20 minutes, securing the draw for her team. Overall, she finished with 8 saves on the afternoon.

The Panthers outshot Oglethorpe 24-11 overall and 9-3 in shots on goal. The home side also took 10 corner kicks to Oglethorpe's five.

The Petrels will be back in action on Friday, when they host Hendrix at the Oglethorpe Track and Field at 4:30 p.m. After that, they'll host Rhodes on Sunday for their final home game of the regular season.
