Yellowjackets, Saints fight to a draw
Coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss to UW-Whitewater, the Yellowjackets wanted to come out flying in the annual border battle against the College of St. Scholastica. The Yellowjackets used the cold blustery night to their advantage more than the Saints early on, but it wasn't enough as the Yellowjackets and Saints played to a 1-1 tie.
Knowing the nature of the rivalry, a physical game was more than likely going to be in store. A physical game it was as St. Scholastica's Ben Cullen had yellow cards at 12:40 and 43:32. Sandwiched between that was a yellow card by Ben Kasper (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) at 16:46. The Yellowjackets scratched and clawed for their first goal when Alberto Rivero-Garcia (Santander, Spain) took a corner kick at 24:34. The ball sailed between a scrum of Saints before it found the foot of Brian Chapman (Maple Grove, Minn.), who knocked in a shot to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead. The Yellowjackets held a 7-6 advantage in shots through one half of play.
The second half proved to be the same thing, a couple of yellow cards mixed in with a goal. Both the yellow cards came at the expense of St. Scholastica's Antov Blackburn and Sean Morgan. This time around it was the Saints who scored the half's lone goal when Sean Morgan took control of the ball and took it up the field wide open. At about 20 yards out with no defenders around him, Morgan blooped a shot over Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong)'s head to tie the game at a goal a piece at 66:07.
Elder made six saves for the Yellowjackets while Adam Hewitt stopped five shots for St. Scholastica.
The Yellowjackets (8-6-3, 1-1-1 WIAC) will return to Public Schools Stadium on Saturday, October 26 when they face Finlandia University. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
