Late Goal lifts Hope Men's Soccer Past Alma 2-1
Junior Tarwo Konbloa scored with 3 minutes, 45 seconds remaining to lift the Hope College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Alma on Tuesday in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Flying Dutchmen (15-4-1 overall) will be the No. 2 seed for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament that determines who gets the league's berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Hope will host third-seeded Olivet at 7 p.m. Thursday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. The other semifinal pits Kalamazoo at Calvin. Saturday's title match is at the site of the highest remaining seed at a time to be determined.
Against Alma, Konbloa, a midfielder from Kentwood (East Kentwood HS) gave the Flying Dutchmen the lead with his sixth goal of the season. Senior midfielder Matthew VanZytveld of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) had the assist.
The score had been tied since the 24th minute when Alma (9-8-1, 5-8-1 MIAA) pulled even off a rebound.
Van Zytveld put Hope (11-3 MIAA) ahead 6 ½ minutes into the match. Senior back Grant Neil of Holland (West Ottawa HS) recorded the assist.
Goalies Ethan Beswick of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) and Will Morlock of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) shared time in goal. Morlock made five saves and did not allow a goal, while Beswick had two saves.
"This was a tough match. Alma was playing for a spot in the tournament," Hope coach Steven Smith said. "They shot 13 times on our goal. Our goalies had to make big saves to keep us in the match."
