#8 Kenyon dispatches Marietta
GAMBIER, Ohio — Kenyon College, ranked No. 8 nationally, defeated Marietta College by the score of 5-0 Wednesday (Sept. 12) afternoon in men's soccer action. The Pioneers fall to 2-3 overall, while Kenyon improves to 4-0-1 on the season.
"When you play a top-10 team in the country you have to minimize mistakes and we did not do that and they punished us every step of the way," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "I'm disappointed in the performance overall, not because we lost, but rather with some of the trends that we have seen develop. We need to fix those now. The long season opening road trip has finally come to an end and we are looking forward to playing under the lights Saturday night."
The Lords came out firing and found the back of the net just over three minutes into the match. David Anderson crossed the ball into the box where Philippe Stengel slipped it past Marietta keeper Trevor Dykstra. Anderson made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal in the 18th minute.
Marietta managed to keep Kenyon off the board for nearly minutes, but the Lords flexed their muscles in the final 14 minutes adding three more goals.
Will Bennett tallied an unassisted goal in the 76th minute. Eric Albrecht, with an assist from Keven Duan, found the back of the net in the 84th and Sebastian Gaese closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 87th minute.
Kenyon held a commanding 30-8 advantage in total shots, including a 14-3 margin in shots on goal. The Lords took 12 corners to just one for the Pioneers.
Ian McInturf recorded the shutout in goal for Kenyon making three saves. Dykstra posted nine saves in net for the Pioneers.
Marietta plays its first game on the new turf this weekend as the Pioneer host the College of Wooster on Saturday (Sept. 15) at 7 p.m.
