Warhawks top men's soccer, 2-1
WHITEWATER, Wis. – Sophomore Will Douglas scored his team-high fifth goal of the season, but UW-Whitewater came from a goal down to defeat the St. Olaf College men's soccer team, 2-1, in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon at Fiskum Field.
Douglas put St. Olaf (3-11-0) on top with a 26th-minute strike only for UW-Whitewater (7-4-1) to tie the game less than three minutes later on a penalty kick to make it a 1-1 game at the break. Kevin Mesich sent the Oles to their ninth one-goal defeat of the season with a 76th-minute game-winner for the Warhawks.
In the 26th minute, Douglas put St. Olaf in position for its first-ever win in Whitewater, firing the ball into the roof of the net from a sharp angle on the left after Alexis Legigand dinked a ball over the top of the Warhawk defense. Douglas has scored or assisted on four of St. Olaf's last five goals, while Legigand earned his second assist of the season on the opener.
The lead, however, lasted just over two and a half minutes, as UW-Whitewater tied it on a Jack Wirth penalty kick in the 28th minute for Wirth's seventh tally of the season.
The Warhawks were caught offsides nine times in the opening half and 13 times for the game, but threatened to take a halftime lead in the 36th minute. After a UW-Whitewater attacker broke the offsides trap, senior goalkeeper Ben Westermeyer rushed off his line to the top of the box to push the attacker wide enough for the Ole defense to recover.
The score remained 1-1 until the 76th minute when Mesich provided the game-winning goal for the hosts, tucking the ball inside the far post from the right side of the box off an assist from Jake Farley for his second goal of the season.
St. Olaf returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 18 at Bethany Lutheran College at 7 p.m. in Mankato.
