Rochester Retains Hillside Shield With 1-0 Win Over RIT

HENREITTA, NY – The University of Rochester retained the Hillside Community Shield on Tuesday afternoon, defeating host RIT 1-0 at RIT's Tiger Stadium.

Sophomore Caden Dowd scored the lone goal of the game in the 28th minute for Rochester, slapping in a rebound of a free kick off the foot of teammate Mitch Volis.  The goal was Dowd's second in as many games and the first game-winning goal of his career.

Rochester now holds a 31-16-2 all-time record over the Tigers, and is 7-0-1 in matches contesting the Hillside Shield, which began in 2012.

The victory levels the UR record on the season at 2-2, while RIT drops to 1-2-1.

RIT was able to generate the games first solid scoring chance in the seventh minute.  Nick Simone took a half volley with his right foot from 13 yards out in the center of the box, but UR keeper Hugh Curran was ready for the shot and made a spectacular save diving to his right.  The rebound attempt by Nate Verso sailed wide.

The Tigers held a strong possession advantage for the opening quarter of the game, with their defense also playing well, not allowing any UR penetration into the offensive zone.

The tide began to turn at the 25 minute mark of the opening half though, as Rochester was able to maintain more control of the ball, especially at the edges of the field.  UR took the opening corner kick of the game at 25:11, but Volis' service into the box was cleared away.

Two minutes later, Dowd recorded the lone tally of the game, tapping in the free kick rebound.

RIT's first corner kick of the contest did not yield a good scoring chance as the attempt in the 54th minute sailed through the box.

At the 60 minute mark, Rochester's Tony Hypsher had a point blank shot from the edge of the crease blocked by the RIT defense, with the rebound finding the foot of Volis.  His attempt was curling towards the upper right corner of the net, but RIT keeper Will Sokol just ticked the shot high of the net for a corner kick.  Sokol had two saves.

The Tigers mounted some solid pressure with just under 10 minutes remaining on the clock, earning a corner kick and a shot on goal from Josh Price, but the attempt was handled in the UR goal by Curran.  The Yellowjacket junior keeper finished with five saves on the day.

RIT's last chance of the night was their best one, but the curving shot from Simon Garno cracked the right post in the 84th minute, much to the chagrin of the RIT bench who though the ball crossed the goal line.

Rochester's next game is slated for this Saturday at home against Vassar.  Kick-off is at 1 pm.
