Captains Advance in USA South Tournament With Late Goal From Emma O'Reilly, 1-0
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After 35 total shots, including 13 on-goal and two more deflecting off of the crossbar, it was rookie Emma O'Reilly that finally tickled the twine in the 83rd minute to lift the top-seeded Captains (14-4-1) past number eight seeded N.C. Wesleyan (2-18-0) in the opening round of the 2010 USA South Tournament, 1-0. CNU will advance to play #4 Greensboro in Friday's semifinal round, at 5:00 pm.
The Captains were playing N.C. Wesleyan for the second time in five days, as they closed the regular season with a 3-0 victory against the Bishops last Friday night. In tonight's contest, two teams battled for almost the full 90 before either team was able to light up the scoreboard.
The CNU defense was stout in the game, allowing just two shots, including just one on frame. The Captains were all over the Bishops early, including a shot from senior Lauren Fleming just over seven minutes into the game that pounded into the crossbar. The NC Wesleyan keeper, Tiina Rastiola, was up for the task though, making eight saves in the first 45 minutes.
After a second half that mirrored the first, Christopher Newport finally got the gamewinner in the 83rd minute. After making a run through the middle, senior Sam Ciaravino saw her defender try to clear the ball, but her attempt went straight into the air. Ciaravino then headed the ball over the defense, where O'Reilly was one-on-one with the goalkeeper. In a race to who would reach the ball first, O'Reilly won, and slipped the ball under the sliding keeper for the score.
It was the eighth goal of the season for the freshman forward, tying her for second on the team. Ciaravino's assist gave her six on the season and 36 total points this season, good for a tie of second all-time at CNU.
Rastiola led the way for the Bishops, making 13 saves in the loss. Sarah Sallenger had both shots for N.C. Wesleyan.
The top-seeded Captains advance to the semifinal round of the USA South Tournament, and will face #4 Greensboro after a 1-0 win against Shenandoah in Tuesday's opening round. The semifinal matchup will kick off at 5:00 pm.
