Captains Fall at The College of New Jersey in NCAA First Round, 4-0
EWING, N.J. -- In the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship, the USA South champion Captains of Christopher Newport suffered a loss to host and 11th ranked TCNJ, 4-0. CNU closes the season with a 16-5-1 overall mark and saw their program-best 14-game win streak snapped in the loss.
Senior Sam Ciaravino closes her career with 86 total points, good for second all-time and is also the Captains all-time leading goal scorer, with 37. She helped lead the Captains to back-to-back NCAA appearances in 2009 and 2010.
In this morning's contest, TCNJ scored a pair of goals in each half, peppering the Captains goalkeeper, sophomore Meghan Gumbs with 33 total shots in the game. Seven different players scored in the game for the Lions, while Brenna Rubino led the way with a goal and an assist.
Gumbs tied her career-high with 11 saves in the game, playing the full 90 minutes for CNU in goal. She wraps up her first season as the starter with a 1.37 goals against average and tied to single season record for shutouts in a season, with 11.
The College of New Jersey advances to play in the NCAA Second Round tomorrow, as they will play host to the winner of the second match today.
The 16-win season ties the all-time best for the Captains, as USA South Coach of the Year Ruth Keegan guided CNU to back-to-back conference championships.
