Women’s Soccer: Cadets Crush Emerson 7-1
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich women's soccer team continued its recent offensive outburst on Saturday afternoon as the Cadets had seven different players score en route to a 7-1 win over Emerson at Howard Field in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
The Cadets (5-1-1, 3-1-1 GNAC) scored three first half goals and then added four in the second half to cruise to the victory over Emerson.
Sophomore forward Grace Fitzpatrick opened the scoring in the third minute with her third goal of the season by beating Emerson goalkeeper Alexandra Altman far post from the right side of the penalty area.
NU kept the pressure on throughout the remainder of the half and pumped in two more goals in the final five minutes of the opening 45 minutes.
Senior forward Nikki Szczepanski scored in her third straight match in the 41st minute by burying a rebound chance after Altman made the initial save to make it 2-0. Junior forward Brittany Casey scored her team-leading sixth marker of the season in the 44th minute off a free kick from 25 yards out.
Cameron Gutierrez got Emerson (2-4-1, 2-2-1 GNAC) on the board in the 52nd minute to briefly cut the Cadets' lead to 3-1 when she knocked home a header off a cross from Amber Bigwood.
However, that's as close as the Lions would get as Norwich scored four more goals in the last 30 minutes to secure the victory.
Sophomore midfielder Baylie Lamarre made it 4-1 by redirecting a Casey free kick chance that Emerson goalkeeper Marissa MacDonald tipped off the crossbar initially in the 61st minute.
Junior midfielder Lisa Esparza increased the lead to 5-1 with a strike from the left side of the penalty area in the 74th minute.
Freshman defender Hannah Magee tallied her first collegiate goal in the 84th minute by burying a ball from outside the 18 to the far post to make it 6-1 Norwich.
Sophomore forward Kathleen Manning capped the scoring with her third goal of the season coming in the 88th minute off an assist from junior forward Courtney Parisot.
Norwich senior goalkeeper Meghan Kennedy made her fourth straight start in goal and picked up the win after turning aside seven shots on net. She improved to 3-1 on the season. Altman took the loss for Emerson after making four saves on seven shots on net.
The Cadets return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Anna Maria for a 4 p.m. GNAC contest. NU will return home to Howard Field next Saturday when it hosts rival Albertus Magnus at 3:30 p.m. as a part of Homecoming Weekend festivities.
