Maritime Falls Just Short of Staten Island, 2-1, Despite Trenkamp's 40th Career Goal
THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2011) – The Maritime women's soccer team nearly capped off a comeback from down 2-0 on Friday at home against CUNY Athletic Conference opponent Staten Island, but a shot by junior Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) with 31 seconds remaining that would've been the equalizer rang off the crossbar and preserved the victory for the visiting Dolphins. The loss drops the Privateers to 2-10-1 overall on the season, while CSI improves to 9-3.
Staten Island grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when senior Paige Buono found the back of the net off a pass by freshman Melissa Gelardi. The Dolphins extended their lead to 2-0 in the 35th minute as freshman Gabriela Galeano scored unassisted. With less than a minute left in the first half, Trenkamp got Maritime on the board when she scored off an assist by senior Samantha Easterman (Amityville, N.Y./St. John the Baptist).
The goal was Trenkamp's team-leading 10th of the season and also the 40th of her two-plus year career thus far with the Privateers, which is a program record.
Junior goalkeeper Courtney Marietta (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) made 13 saves in the losing effort, while CSI keeper, freshman Samantha Wysokowski had three saves and picked up the victory.
Maritime returns to action on Monday, Oct. 10, in the first game of a soccer doubleheader with the men's team. The Privateers will welcome in the City College of New York, also of the CUNYAC, at 5 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
