Captains Get Past Methodist at Home, 3-1
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University junior Annemarie Weaver headed in the game-winning goal early in the second half off an assist from freshman Kelsey Snyder, and the Captains improved to 5-6 overall, 3-1 in USA South action with a 3-1 victory over Methodist today.
The Monarchs fell to 5-9-1 overall, 2-4-1 in the USA South while CNU kept pace with the top teams in the league with the win.
CNU opened up the scoring in the 16th minute of action when rookie Sarah Perrett made a run up the left side. She looked inside for senior Kendall Dishaw, but her pass was deflected off a defender back to her own feet. Perrett then got past one more defender before hammering a hard shot over the goalkeeper into the right side of the goal.
The Monarchs top goal scorer would tie the game in the 24th minute, with a long shot from the right side. Lisa Paschal found herself open outside the box on the right and sent a liner toward the goal. It glanced off the left post and into the goal for the game-tying tally.
Methodist managed to keep CNU off the board the rest of the half, as the Captains outshot the Monarchs 9-2, including four shots on-goal.
Early in the second half, though, the Captains found the eventual gamewinner off a corner kick. Snyder came up from the defensive line to take the kick and sent a perfect cross back post, where Weaver leaped up and connected with the header into the back of the goal.
CNU would add an insurance goal in the 72nd minute when Dishaw found herself wide open in front of the goalmouth off a header pass from Kelsey Snyder.
Junior goalkeeper Meghan Gumbs had to make just one save in the game as the Captains defense held Methodist to just four shots in the contest. The Captains managed 18, including eight on-goal.
CNU will return to action tomorrow, October 16 at 2:00 pm to take on league-leading Greensboro College (8-4, 5-1) on Senior Day.
