Three Second Half Goals Send CNU Past NC Wesleyan, 4-0
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The CNU Captains (8-7-1, 6-1-1) beat N.C. Wesleyan (2-16-0, 2-7-0) in dominant fashion today, winning 4-0 and will now play for the regular season championship tomorrow night at home versus Shenandoah at 7:00 pm. Sophomore Emma O'Reilly scored twice for CNU to lead the way, as the Captains outshot the Bishops by a final tally of 34-6.
Freshman Sarah Perrett scored the eventual gamewinner in the first half off an assist by rookie Kelsey Thomas, but the Captains broke it wide open in the second half with three goals.
CNU added the second goal of the day just 2:51 into the second half when O'Reilly got a cross from sophomore Carly Utterback and headed it in for the score.
With one assist each in the game already, Thomas and Utterback would combine to set up O'Reilly again in the 69th minute. Thomas played Utterback into the corner where she sent another cross into the box for O'Reilly. The sophomore forward connected on the one-timer for the goal and the 3-0 lead.
O'Reilly's two goals give her a team-leading seven on the season, as she has scored a team-high 15 points.
Junior midfielder Dani Gunderson returned for her first action in two weeks after an injury and picked up right where she left off, scoring in the 85th minute to round out the 4-0 win. Freshman Priscilla Harrison assisted on the goal as Gunderson connected from 25 yards out.
CNU outshot the home team 34-6, allowing just two shots on-goal from the N.C. Wesleyan squad. Josie Adams led the way with both shots on-goal, while Johanna Wallinder made 12 saves.
The Captains put 17 shots on frame, led by sophomore Jackie Bond with four and Thomas with three.
On Saturday, CNU will play a make-up game against Shenandoah at home at 7:00 pm. The Hornets currently lead the league with a 6-1 record in the USA South, and is playing a Friday night game vs. Meredith. Whether SU wins or loses on Friday night, the game vs. the Captains in Newport News on Saturday will determine the 2011 USA South Regular Season Champion. For live stats of the game, click here.
