Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener to Southern Maine, 3-0
GORHAM, Maine (August 30, 2013) – The Maritime women's soccer team opened up its 2013 schedule with a Friday matinee matchup in the opening contest of the University of Southern Maine Invitational against the host Huskies. After trailing by just one goal at halftime, the Huskies added two more tallies in the second half to pull away late for the 3-0 victory.
Southern Maine controlled the early portion of play as it took the first eight shots of the contest. On the eighth shot the Huskies' Jordan Grant was able to get the shot by Maritime sophomore netminder Jori Cooper to make the game 1-0.
In the 28th minute of play, the Privateers picked up their first shot of the young season as senior Jorrie Trenkamp had her shot blocked before it could reach the target. Cooper made three more saves over the final 17 minutes of the half to give her a first period total of 10 saves.
As play shifted to the second half, Trenkamp registered another shot in the second minute of the stanza. Maritime had several more opportunities over the ensuing minutes as junior Kadie Hook, Trenkamp, and sophomore Leanne Lavelleeach picked up shots that were stopped by Huskies goalkeeper Katie Cobb.
Shortly after Lavelle's shot, Southern Maine came down the field with a shot of their own and was able to score in the 56th minute of play to increase its lead to two. A few minutes later, the Huskies were awarded a penalty shot and converted to cap off the scoring at three goals.
Maritime rattled off two more shots over the remainder of regulation, but the Huskies were able to hold the Privateers off the board and hold on for the 3-0 win.
In goal, Cooper ended the afternoon with 13 saves, while allowing the three Southern Maine goals as she fell on the season to 0-1. For Southern Maine, Cobb picked up the victory while notching five saves of her own in the win.
Final stats saw Southern Maine outshoot Maritime 22-8, while corner kicks were also in favor of the home squad at a 6-1 margin.
Maritime (0-1) heads back to the field tomorrow afternoon for its second and final match of the Southern Maine Invitational when it takes on Thomas (Maine) at 2 p.m. Southern Maine (1-0) also returns to the pitch tomorrow to take on Gordon, who takes on Thomas later this afternoon.
