Women's Soccer Blanks Lehman 3-0 in Non-Conference Action
THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (September 4, 2013) – The Maritime women's soccer team improved to 2-1 on the season as they defeated the Lehman Lightning by the score of 3-0 on Wednesday evening on Reinhart Field. In the game freshman Marisa Athan (Mineola, N.Y./Mineola) picked up her first two career goals, while senior Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) got the scoring started early in the first half.
The Privateers controlled the majority of the play starting with the opening kickoff and had an early chance in the second minute, however it was called offside and Maritime was forced to regroup. Several minutes later junior Kadie Hook (Monkton, Md./John Carroll) sliced a brilliant through-ball through the Lehman defense to Trenkamp, who placed the ball into the left side of the goal to put Maritime up 1-0.
Maritime continued to rattle off shot after shot, but Lehman netminder Melanie Varillas was able to deny the Privateers and hold them to just a one-goal advantage. Lehman did pick up a shot on goal in the final seconds of the first period, but sophomore goalkeeper Kristen Hoar (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore East) stopped the bouncing shot and sent her team into halftime with a slim one-goal lead.
In the second half, the Privateers picked up just where they had left off in the first period with several shots making in on-target including one each from Athan and Trenkamp. In the 71st minute of play, Maritime was awarded a corner kick that Hook sent to the center of the box and was met mid-air by the head of Athan for the first goal of her young career.
Less than five minutes later, Athan was at it again as she picked up her second goal of the contest after taking a quick touch-pass from Trenkamp in front of the goal. Athan squeezed the shot between newly inserted Lehman netminder Marleny Hernandez and the right goal post to increase the home squad's lead to three.
The Privateers went on to take eight more shots over the remainder of regulation but with no success. However, the final horn sounded and Maritime collected its second consecutive victory.
Final stats saw Maritime outshoot Lehman by a 35-4 margin, including 20-1 in the second half. Corner kicks were also in favor of the Privateers by a 15-1 differential.
In goal, Hoar picked up her second win in a row to move to 2-0 on the season, while making just two saves on the evening. Taking the loss was Varillas after allowing the first two Privateer tallies, and making seven saves in 72:49 of play. Hernandez played the final 17:11 of regulation and allowed Athan's second goal while registering three saves of her own.
Maritime (2-1) will head back on the road for its next contest, this Saturday against John Jay with the updated start time of 11:30 a.m. on Randall's Island. Lehman (1-1) will look to regroup against St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Cedar Crest Soccer Tournament in Allentown, Pa.
