Pair of Second Half Goals Leads CNU Past Roanoke, 2-0
SALEM, Va. -- A pair of second-half goals and another sturdy defensive effort led the Christopher Newport women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout on Saturday, dropping Roanoke College (2-2-1) on the road. The Captains improve to 4-1-1 overall, getting scoring strikes from leading scorer Emma O'Reilly and rookie Sam Rabinek.
It is the fourth win of the season for CNU, all coming by a final of 2-0. It was also the third game-winning goal for O'Reilly, who picked up her sixth tally of the season.
In the first half, neither team could get on the board, despite multiple scoring chances. Roanoke's best chance came about halfway through the frame when Ashley Barnes got free on a breakaway. CNU's rookie goalkeeper Haley Casanova came out to the top of the box, slid, and knocked away the attempt by Barnes in a terrific defensive play. It was one of four saves by Casanova in the first half.
With the teams tied at halftime, it was CNU who came out of the break with more offensive firepower. O'Reilly's score came just 3:39 into the second half, racing out of the break for a 1-0 lead. Junior defender Kelsey Thomas fed O'Reilly on the run, who pounded a shot into the right side of the goal.
CNU added to its lead in the 71st minute on a corner kick goal by a pair of newcomers. Transfer midfielder Lindsay Mondloch placed a gorgeous kick to the middle of the box, where Rabinek headed it home for her first career tally. Rabinek's header went into the right side of the goal off the corner kick.
The Captains' offense pressured Carolyn Sarbacher, the Roanoke keeper, throughout the second half, holding a 10-3 advantage in shots after intermission. In the game, CNU outshot the home team, 15-10, with seven shots on-goal.
Casanova finished her fourth clean sheet of the season with five total saves. She lowered her season goals against average to 0.48 while upping her save percentage to 90%.
CNU will take over a week off before they return home to take on Catholic University on Sunday, September 22 at 1:00 pm.
