Blue Jays Shutout Lynchburg In Season Opening Victory

The Basics
• Score: #16 Johns Hopkins - 2, #11 Lynchburg - 0
• Records: JHU (1-0) • Lynchburg (0-1)
• Location: Roanoke, VA • Kerr Stadium
• The Short Story: Johns Hopkins opened the season with a dominating performance at the Roanoke Invitational Soccer Showcase, defeating 11th-ranked Lynchburg 2-0.

How it Happened
• Emily Maheras kicked off the scoring for the Blue Jays just over four minutes into the contest, ripping one past the keeper and into the net for an early 1-0 lead. Hopkins appeared to have another fantastic chance in the 20th minute, sending a ball in to pull Lynchburg keeper Caitlin Dorsch out of the net, but a strong effort defensively prevented a JHU shot.
• Lynchburg didn't pose many offensive threats until late in the first half, forcing a Caitlin Hendricks diving save to keep things at 1-0 with seven minutes left in the half. Hendricks added another save in the final minute of the first half, sending Hopkins into the break with the lead.
• The Blue Jays got a great look early in the second half, but an outstanding save was made, forcing a corner and ultimately ending in a defensive stop for Lynchburg.
• Johns Hopkins picked up another goal late to ice the game away, as Rachel Jackson scored in the 85th minute to make it 2-0.

What it Means
• JHU has now won 14 straight season opening contests.
• Head Coach Leo Weil finds himself just six wins away from 400 in his illustrious career.
• The Blue Jays improved to 3-1-1 all-time against Lynchburg after losing their last meeting with the Hornets 2-1 in 2014.

Inside the Box Score
• Hendricks earned the win in net, remaining a perfect 5-0 in her young career.
• Maheras' goal gives her 14 career goals and puts her over 30 points in her Blue Jay career.
• Jackson picked right back up where she left off in 2018, scoring her 12th career goal in just 20 games played.
