Stormy Petrels rout LaGrange 4-0, improve to 2-0 on season

The Oglethorpe women's soccer team traveled just southwest of Atlanta to LaGrange Friday evening for their first true road game of the season. The Stormy Petrels passed the test with flying colors, scoring three goals in the second half en route to a 4-0 win over the homestanding LaGrange Panthers. The result improved the team to 2-0 on the young season.

The two teams remained scoreless through the opening 40 minutes of the game, but the Petrels broke the deadlock in the 41st minute when sophomore defender Lauren Kirby took a through ball from junior forward Medina Besic and slotted it home to give the team a 1-0 lead headed into the halftime break.

Oglethorpe really opened it up in the second half. Freshman midfielder Kieran Burkey scored her second goal in as many games, taking a pass from fellow freshman midfielder Madison Riley and doubling the Petrels' lead in the 63rd minute. The flood gates opened for the visitors at that point, as Besic tallied a goal off a rebound in the 69th minute to make it 3-0. The Petrels finished the scoring in the 81st minute, when freshman forward Kirsten Brown finished off a through ball from sophomore midfielder Tress Southard.

The Petrels dominated the contest from start to finish, outshooting the Panthers 19-3 overall and 13-2 on goal. They also took nine corner kicks to LaGrange's three. Oglethorpe outshot LaGrange 7-1 in the first half and 12-2 in the second.

They'll be back in action Sunday afternoon when they travel northeast to Demorest for Piedmont's Bradford Classic. They'll take on Averett at noon that day, then will return to Atlanta for their home opener against Bob Jones on Sept. 13.
