Defending champions top first 2019 rankings

With the first full week of the season now in the books, the D3soccer.com Top 25 in back for another year. With five or fewer games played per team and 60 men's and over 70 women's squads still undefeated, it's very difficult to distinguish the teams that are really going places this year from those whose early record flatters them. Consequently, the lack of consensus in these first polls comes as no surprise. 47 men's teams and 52 women's teams were named on ballots. However, that said, the men's No. 1 was unanimous and the women's No. 1 was nearly unanimous.

On the men's side, defending champion Tufts (2-0-0) was first on all ballots with NESCAC rival Amherst (2-0-0) coming in at No. 2 ahead of five other teams that also garnered second place votes. No. 3 John Carroll (5-0-0) is the highest ranked of several teams (e.g. Capital, Hardin-Simmons, Centre, Mount Union, St. Mary's) that have had surprisingly good starts to the new season. Notable ommissions include injury-plagued Messiah (1-2-1) who has stumbled out of the gate and Trinity (Texas) (1-2-1) who only has one win (in overtime) out of four games.

Defending women's champion Williams (3-0-0) starts the new season where they finished last year as the No. 1 ranked team. William Smith (3-0-0), with their win over Messiah, did garner two first place votes, but TCNJ (3-0-0) edged the Heron's for the No. 2 spot. The pair of California schools, No. 16 Pomona-Pitzer (3-0-1) and No. 24 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (3-0-1), are two of the biggest surprises of the opening two weeks. Winless Hardin-Simmons (0-2-1) is absent from the women's rankings for the first time since their inception back in 2009, coinciding with their men's team making a rare appearance in the men's Top 25.
